Celebrating National Carers Week: Recognising the Unsung Heroes

At Mediscrubs, we believe in celebrating not only our healthcare professionals but also the unsung heroes who provide invaluable care and support to their loved ones. National Carers Week, running from Sunday, 15th October to Saturday, 21st October 2023, is a special time to recognise and appreciate the outstanding contribution of Australia's 2.65 million carers.

Millions of Reasons to Care

This year's theme, 'Millions of Reasons to Care,' emphasises the diversity and dedication of carers in Australia. They come from various backgrounds, ages, and walks of life, but they all share a selfless commitment to caring for family members and friends.

Carers Are the Backbone of Our Communities and Economy

Carers are not only the backbone of our communities but also a vital component of the national economy. If all carers were to cease their caring roles, it would cost the country a staggering $77.9 billion per year. That's over $1.4 billion per week! Their role is immeasurable and often goes unnoticed.

Your Chance to Make a Difference

During National Carers Week, you have the opportunity to show your appreciation for these remarkable individuals. More than one in ten Australians are carers, and they deserve recognition and support.

Raising Awareness and Learning More

You can take part in National Carers Week by organising events, such as morning or afternoon teas, fundraisers, or workshops, to raise awareness about the diverse caring roles in Australia. It's a chance to understand what caring entails and to discover the resources and services available to carers.

Get Involved in National Carers Week

There are numerous ways to participate in National Carers Week. Attend or host an event, organize a walk or other activities, and share your support on social media. You can even check out resources provided by Carers Australia to learn more about caring and carer wellbeing.

What is Carers Australia?

Carers Australia is the national peak body representing Australia's unpaid carers. They work diligently to influence policies and services at a national level and advocate on behalf of carers. Their vision is to create an Australia that values and supports the contributions carers make to their loved ones and the community.

Find the Support You Need

If you suspect that you might be a carer, there is support available. Carer Gateway provides a range of services, including information, peer support, counseling, coaching, and training. No matter where you are in Australia, there's a Carer Gateway service provider to guide you.

Carers Australia also offers a wealth of resources to help you understand the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and overall carer wellbeing. Young carers under the age of 25 can find specialised support and services through the Young Carer Network.

Throughout National Carers Week, a variety of events and activities take place across Australia. Check out the interactive map of events on the Carers Australia website. You can also register and host your own event to have it promoted on their website.
